Water Heater

Most Common Cause: When a water heater rusts, water escapes into a drain directly below the appliance. Water heater leaks can go unnoticed until the unit eventually “bottoms out” and the home loses all water pressure, or you notice a significant increase on your bill. A leak can cause a spike in both water and gas (if applicable).

Recommended Action: If you have a leaking water heater, contact a licensed and bonded plumber to have it repaired or replaced. If you participate in the Utility Shield program or another warranty service, check your plan for coverage.

Common Cause: Hot showers are nice, but setting the temperature too high can result in energy inefficiency.

Recommended Action: Set the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees. Lower the temperature if you are going on vacation or will be gone for an extended period of time. If your water heater is in your garage, insulate it along with the water pipes.

Common Cause: Hosting guests in your home increases consumption through things like additional showers, loads of laundry and dishwasher cycles.

Recommended Action: Install low-flow showerheads. Only run the washer or dishwasher when you have enough for a full load.
