Irrigation System

Most Common Cause: Setting your system for efficient use can help avoid excess water consumption. If the system is running too long or too frequently, it can result in a large spike in consumption.

Recommended Action: Run your irrigation system less frequently. Overwatering isn’t good for your grass, anyway! Avoid evaporation by running the system early in the morning or in the evening.

Common Cause: If your irrigation system is not currently in use but you’ve experienced a large spike in water usage, you may want to have the system checked for leaks. If there’s a leak in the underground irrigation line, it can be difficult to detect without a licensed and bonded plumber.

Recommended Action: Contact a licensed and bonded plumber to inspect your system. If you participate in the Utility Shield program or another warranty service, check your plan for coverage.

Common Cause: Over time, water-line connections can wear away. If your irrigation system is connected to the meter setting in the pit, constant standing water in the meter pit outside of rain events could indicate a leak at the connection. The irrigation system does not have to be on or running for the connection to leak.

Recommended Action: Contact a licensed and bonded plumber to inspect your system. If you participate in the Utility Shield program or another warranty service, check your plan for coverage.
