Natural Gas Furnace

Most Common Cause: Weather directly impacts your furnace’s energy consumption. Usage increases when the temperature drops, causing your furnace to run longer and more frequently. Recommended Action: Weatherize your home. Ensure there are no leaks in doors or windows that lead to the outside. Close vents in rooms you don’t commonly use. Have your home insulated (or re-insulated, if necessary). |

Common Cause: A neglected or malfunctioning thermostat can lead to higher gas consumption. Recommended Action: Turn the thermostat down when you’re not home. Don’t set the temperature higher than 68 degrees. Install a programmable thermostat to help regulate the temperature and prevent “thermostat wars.” If your thermostat is set at 75 degrees but the temperature of the home is 65 degrees, or if the furnace doesn’t shut off when it reaches the set temperature, the thermostat may need to be repaired or replaced. |

Common Cause: A poorly maintained, inefficient furnace uses more gas. Recommended Action: Have the furnace serviced by a licensed professional before the weather turns cold. Replace the furnace filter once per month. A furnace filter clogged with dust, pet dander or other particles will result in decreased airflow and more wear and tear on your unit. |
