Earthy, Musty, Moldy or Fishy Taste or Odor

Most Common Cause: These naturally occurring odors may be caused by algae blooms growing in the rivers and reservoirs. Our laboratory monitors the rivers and reservoirs regularly for blooms and treats to reduce the amount of taste/odor. Our treatment plants make adjustments based on the laboratory results to improve the taste. However, at times, some odor can be detected at taps. Algae blooms are most commonly experienced during the warmer months of the year, but can also live in colder weather.

Recommended Action: No health/safety concerns and water use can continue as normal. However, if desired, use a point-of-use activated carbon filter (not a whole-house filter) commonly found at a variety of local stores to further reduce taste and odor. Please follow manufacturer’s recommendations regarding regular filter changes.

After taking the above listed actions, if the concern was not resolved, please open a case to be contacted by a Customer Case Manager.
