10 Thousand Trees

To help keep Indy's Waterways Clean!

Citizens Energy Group, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, and the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) have joined forces to begin a long-term partnership to plant 10,000 trees across the city as a way to beautify neighborhoods and reduce combined sewer overflows to area waterways.

Why 10 Thousand Trees?

  • 10 Thousand Trees is an initiative to plant ten thousand trees in support of Citizens Energy Group’s investments that will nearly eliminate combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to area rivers and streams by the year 2025.

  • To prevent sewer overflows from reaching area waterways, Citizens will invest about $2 billion by the year 2025 to build the DigIndy Tunnel System and expand its wastewater treatment plants. These investments are part of an agreement with U.S. EPA.

  • Citizens continues to evaluate sustainable solutions that further reduce CSOs and provide additional environmental benefits.  An additional 10,000 mature trees planted within the CSO area may provide up to a million gallons of stormwater storage during rain events and thus further reduce CSOs.

  • With research clearly demonstrating the impact of urban trees on stormwater and CSO reduction, health, safety, neighborhood value and overall quality of life, the 10 Thousand Trees Program is providing far-reaching benefits to the community.
